The long hours of the night dredged on and Emily turned several times, restless and angry. Her life had turned to pure turmoil and she wasn’t one to take it well. She liked a simple, ordered life. One that involved running the household, caring for her uncle, attending to friends, and generally keeping to herself. Although she’d been sick with grief after what had happened to Clive, Michael, and Joseph, feeling somehow certain their deaths had been her fault.

So now she lay, eyes wide open, thinking about everything, the danger to her uncle, her engagement to Jeffrey, and finally, her growing affection for Tristan.

Even now, hours after they’d parted, she could still feel his nearness, still delighted in how he’d held his breath when she’d touched him. She remembered the way his hands had felt upon her, and even the stirring of desire when he kissed her. Yes, she could easily close her eyes and imagine him nearby.

In the back of her mind he was there, the hum of his need for her constantly in her thoughts. Although she didn’t understand it, she knew that if she so much as called out to him, he would come to her.

“Tristan . . .”

A moment later, a light tapping sounded on her door. Though she knew she was courting danger, Emily couldn’t help herself any longer. With a desire stronger than she’d ever known, she wanted him. Her body trembled with the excitement.

Rising from her bed, she slowly approached the door.

He was close.

Opening the door, she peered into the hall. She hadn’t had to look. She’d known it was him. She’d summoned Tristan with her mind, and like a marionette, he’d jumped to her pull of his strings.

“Please,” he said.

“I’m sorry?”

“I can’t stand it any longer. You’ve been torturing me for hours. You must let me make love to you this instant, or go to sleep.”

“Oh.” Emily’s heart beat a pace faster. She stood for a moment, speechless.

Tristan waited for her decision, the evidence of his arousal tightening in his trousers. All at once the memory of their imagined lovemaking and the close call in the carriage came bursting into her mind.

“Well? Which is it?” he asked.

He didn’t move, in fact, waited for several seconds for her to invite him in.

“Come inside and we shall discuss it,” she said, though her voice quivered with anticipation.

He shook his head and sent her a smoldering expression written on his moist brow and in the way his teeth chewed just slightly on his bottom lip. Panting, he appeared as though he’d just run across the yard.

“No more discussion, Emily. Not now, not ever.”

Emily licked her lips. She knew that if she did as her body begged her, she could never turn back.

“Which is it, then?”

“Come in,” she said at last, and the next thing she knew he was lifting her in his arms, his mouth finding hers, and he was kicking the door closed behind them.

Leaning with his back against the door, holding her to him like a desperate man holding onto a lifeline, he kissed her deeply.
